Emirates charge for bicycle carriage...

Well, apart from the fitness training I'm all set to go Bike Bengal! Bought tickets today to fly out with Emirates 11/2/10 from Heathrow. Decent flight hours - out 2pm and arrive Kolkata for a chapati and curry breakfast following morning!

Tickets reasonably priced and cheaper than 2008; however, recession is still in evidence and you need to pack light as, if you exceed the hold baggage allowance of 30 kg (incl. Bike), you will be charged an incremental £25 for each KG!! Can be pricy if you are planning to take the kitchen sink and a heavy bike with you! (Not sure if Air India / Jet Airways have similar policy for bicycle carriage, but please check and avoid being surprised at the check in).

On my last trip, my hold baggage was below 20kg and my bike with panniers/lights etc. weighed ca 15 kg. This time round I have a lighter bike ca 10kg and will be carrying lights and accessories with the cabin luggage. A note on panniers - if you really do need to carry stuff, then get something light/small. Other than for my heavy camera, it really was surplus to requirements last time round; if you needed anything whilst on the road, you could get it from the accompanying support vessels.
